OPC Unified Architecture
Developers' Conference and
Workshop 2008
An OPC Event for: Decision Makers, Engineers & Visionaries

The OPC Foundation has released its next generation specification for software application interoperability – The Unified Architecture (UA). At this event you will learn directly from the architects and developers of UA.

When: October 27-31, 2008

Where: Siemens Corporate Technolgy Center, Otto-Hahn-Ring 6, Munich, Germany

Cost: DevCon: $1200, Dev W/S: $1800, Both Events: $2700 - You must register and pay by credit card online by October 10th.  For Payment by Purchase Order send an email to devcon@opcfoundation.org.

Registration details are below.

About OPC’s Unified Architecture

The OPC Foundation Unified Architecture defines secure reliable interoperability for exchanging data and information from the factory floor to the enterprise. The open, cross platform, service oriented architecture builds on and unifies the existing, successfully adopted OPC Foundation interfaces.

UA was developed collaboratively by over thirty OPC vendors. The collaboration also included many other standards consortia that have contributed to the development and have committed to producing UA companion specifications. These companion specifications will describe the standard way to expose and exchange the data and information models defined by these other organizations, utilizing UA as the interoperable transport mechanism.

About the Developers' Conference and Workshop

The OPC Foundation will conduct both an OPC UA Developers’ Conference and an OPC UA Developers’ Workshop in Munich, Germany during the week of October 27, 2008. The UA Developers’ Conference will begin at 13.00 on Monday, October 27, 2008 and end at 17.00 on Wednesday, October 29, 2008. The UA Developers’ Workshop will begin at 08.30 on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 and end at 17.00 on Friday, October 31, 2008. The Wednesday session will be the final session for the DevCon and the first session for the Developers’ Workshop.

The purpose of the Developer Conference is to provide an overview of OPC UA technology. The DevCon will answer the question, “What is OPC UA?” The goal of the DevCon is to motivate vendor companies to develop OPC UA products and to motivate end-user companies to use OPC UA products. Seating for this event is limited to 95 participants.

The purpose of the Developers’ Workshop is to provide hands-on training for product developers. The Workshop will answer the question, “How do I implement OPC UA?” The goal of the
Developer Workshop is to provide a jumpstart for those companies that are already committed to developing OPC UA. If you are a Code Developer and you plan to attend the Developers’ Workshop and you have not attended a previous DevCon, you should attend the Monday and Tuesday sessions. This was the strongest recommendation that we received from the group feedback at the June OPC UA Developers’ Workshop. Seating for this event is limited to 50 participants - 25 in the embedded C/C++ track and 25 in the .NET track.

Payments for both events will be by credit card unless you need to process with a Purchase Order Number.

If you will only attend the DevCon, the cost will be $1200 USD. Please register here:

The price for all the events includes all conference material, continental breakfast, coffee and drinks, lunch, a reception on Monday evening and dinner on Tuesday night for the DevCon and dinner on Thursday night for the Workshop. It also includes either a 3-day bus/train pass or a 5-day bus/train pass which is good for the S-Bahn, the U-Bahn and all buses in Munich City Zone 1. It is not good for transportation to or from the airport.

If you have any questions please send them to

Who Should Attend?

• Software architects and developers responsible for application integration from the factory floor through the enterprise.

• Manufacturing end-user and system integrator visionaries with a long term view of the future that wish to drive the vendor community toward cost-saving interoperable solutions.

• Product developers and development decision makers from all existing OPC vendors.

DevCon Attendees Will Learn ...

Concepts

• How UA embraces the latest internet technologies to provide true platform independence.

• How UA seamlessly combines the functionality of all of the existing OPC interfaces.

• How UA will provide plug-n-play interoperability at higher levels of the enterprise (MES, ERP …).

• How UA will become the preferred method to exchange data through collaborative efforts with other standards organizations (ISA, Fieldbus Foundation, HART Communication Foundation, PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation, FDI, …).

• How UA will solve real end-user application problems.

Architecture

• What an information model is and why UA is an information modeler’s dream.
• How to expose any data from any system without the need to transform it into another format.
• How to use UA in automation systems represented by components using device description technology (EDDL).
• Why UA provides multiple transports and encodings to balance the need for speed and compatibility.
• How UA applies the latest state-of-the-art Web Services security standards.
• How UA is architected for robustness, reliability and redundancy.
• How end-users can “UA-enable” any existing OPC application.
• How OPC vendors can migrate existing OPC products to UA.
• Why OPC provides a high level programmer’s API in multiple languages to its members.

Implementation

• How to implement UA applications on a Microsoft .NET platform using WCF (Windows Communication Foundation)
• How the communications stack, programmers API and the reference implementation all fit together and how to choose the right entry point for your UA development.

• Why OPC provides portable ‘C’ code for easy UA implementations in embedded devices.
• How UA “Profiles” allow developers to pick and choose the functionality they need.
• How integrating UA into your application is easier than integrating the previous OPC interfaces.
